Coach in 2026: A Full Guide to the American Label
In 2026, Coach, one of the most familiar American fashion labels, is posting vigorous sales growth. What opened as a modest leather workshop grew into a handbag specialist, and the brand now carries clothing, shoes and accessories through stores worldwide. The core idea at the heart of the label has barely changed for decades: leather goods of real quality, priced below the traditional European luxury houses. A federal court has characterized that niche as accessible luxury, separate from both mass-market fashion and true luxury.
This guide explains how Coach began, who owns and runs it, how big the business has become and what it offers. Since the difference between a full-price coach store and a coach outlet regularly leads to confusion, it covers that also. All figures are dated to their sources, and all prices are observed market prices rather than an official price list.
How a Manhattan Workshop Became an American Fashion Name

The story of Coach really begins in 1941, when a tiny family-run leather workshop was established in Manhattan. In Coach’s own history, six artisans labored in a loft on 34th Street, making wallets, billfolds and other small leather goods aimed at men. The handbags and the Coach name came later, the name dating to about 1960 or 1961. The original owners of the workshop were not Miles and Lillian Cahn, even though the couple is at times incorrectly described that way.
By around 1950, Miles was running the factory, having joined the business with Lillian in 1946. In 1961 the Cahns bought out the original owners and took over. Lillian Cahn reportedly suggested adding women’s handbags, a decision that transformed the company. The leather finish called glovetanned leather, inspired by the way a worn baseball glove becomes softer with wear, is credited to coach outlet store Miles Cahn.
Bonnie Cashin and Coach
The designer most closely associated with early Coach is Bonnie Cashin, who was its first lead designer. As reported, she worked under contract rather than as an employee, and she was never a co-founder. Her start date is a minor puzzle, because Coach’s own pages give it as both 1961 and 1962. Her departure is clearer: she left Coach in 1974.
Bonnie Cashin brought in the brass turnlock closure in 1964, which, according to Coach, was inspired by the toggle on the top of her convertible. She is also given credit for side pockets, coin-purse details and brighter colors that relaxed the brand’s look. To this day, the turnlock is still one of the best-known Coach details, and it can be seen on bags such as the Cassie crossbody.
Changing Owners, Going Public and the Birth of Tapestry
Sara Lee Corporation took over Coach in July 1985. The company listed its shares in October 2000, and Sara Lee reportedly exited completely the following year. Instead of being a mid-century heritage motif, the “C” monogram is a modern addition: Coach debuted its Signature collection built around it in 2001. The corporation, Coach, Inc., was renamed Tapestry, Inc. on 31 October 2017, and its stock ticker changed from COH to TPR.
Only the parent company changed its name, while the Coach brand, its stores and its products kept their names. Stuart Weitzman, the shoe label Coach, Inc. had bought in 2015, went from Tapestry to Caleres in a deal that was finalized on 4 August 2025. Of the only two brands Tapestry owns in 2026, namely Coach and Kate Spade, Coach is by far the more substantial.
How the Capri Deal Fell Apart
Tapestry announced on 10 August 2023 that it had struck a deal to purchase Capri Holdings, the parent of Michael Kors, Versace and Jimmy Choo. A legal challenge to the deal came from the Federal Trade Commission in April 2024, as it asked a federal court to halt the acquisition with a preliminary injunction. A federal judge in the Southern District of New York granted the preliminary injunction on 24 October 2024. The ruling did not decide the merits, yet it stopped the companies from closing the acquisition while the challenge went on.
An accessible luxury handbag market, different from both mass-market bags and true luxury, was accepted as a real market by the court in its decision. Tapestry and Capri ended their agreement on 14 November 2024, saying the legal process was unlikely to finish before their February 2025 deadline. Because the acquisition was never consummated, Tapestry owns no part of Michael Kors, Versace or Jimmy Choo.
Who Steers Coach Today
Joanne Crevoiserat is chief executive officer of Tapestry, the parent company. Todd Kahn leads the brand itself as Coach’s CEO and brand president, a job he took up on an interim basis in July 2020 and took on permanently in April 2021. The creative lead is Stuart Vevers, whose appointment was made public in June 2013.
Vevers continues as Coach’s creative director in 2026, his first Coach collection having reportedly been presented in February 2014. Before Coach, he is reported to have been creative director at Loewe after a spell at Mulberry. During his tenure, Coach has drawn heavily on its archive, both reissuing older designs and reworking vintage shapes into new bags such as the Tabby. His Fall 2026 collection was shown on 11 February 2026 at the Cunard Building in New York.
Coach in Numbers
Tapestry’s annual report for the fiscal year ended 27 June 2026 offers the clearest picture of Coach’s overall scale. Coach’s net sales totaled $6,914.7 million, up 24% on the prior year, while Tapestry as a whole reported $8,004.2 million. That means about 86% of group sales were generated by Coach.
By the close of that fiscal year, Coach counted 973 stores under direct operation, split between 336 in North America and 637 in international markets. Another figure in circulation, about 1,299 stores, refers to every Tapestry store instead of Coach alone. Tapestry also said the average unit retail price of Coach handbags increased at a mid-teens percentage rate during the year. The company has linked that rise partly to reduced promotional activity.

Handbags, Apparel and Footwear: What Coach Sells
Handbags remain the heart of the business, and coach handbags today mix structured icons with soft, slouchy leather. Important launches include the Tabby in 2019, based on a 1970s archive shape, the Rogue in 2016 and again in 2021, and the Brooklyn, a relaxed coach shoulder bag, in August 2024. After appearing on the Fall 2024 runway, the Empire Carryall went on sale in February 2025. At the top end, a Rogue 25 in alligator was observed at $8,000, the highest bag price observed, but the Kisslock Frame Bag, said to have opened the Fall 2026 show, was observed at $350. The Coach Originals line reissues archive designs as newly made bags, so those pieces are not vintage.
Ready-to-wear now carries real weight in the offer: coach clothing for Fall 2026 brought varsity jackets in leather and in leather with wool, the brand’s first all-shearling varsity jacket, peacoats and suede coats. The same show added blazers, flared trousers, A-line skirts, floor-length high-collar dresses and all-gender jacquard knits. Footwear includes sneakers such as the Soho Sneaker and the laceless Skate Sneaker, and fashion press reported loafers, clogs, booties and sandals for fall. Beyond that, Coach operates Coach (Re)Loved, launched in 2021 and reported to span trade-ins, restored bags and upcycled pieces, and also Coachtopia, a circular-design sub-brand that debuted on 20 April 2023.
Where to Buy Coach: Stores, Coach Outlet and Online
A full-price coach store offers the current collections, and the grandest flagships go by the Coach House name. The New York Coach House on Fifth Avenue reportedly opened in 2016, and a new Coach House at 645 Fifth Avenue has been reported as targeted for 2027. London’s Coach House on Regent Street also opened in 2016, and in the UK the brand is stocked by Harrods, Selfridges and John Lewis as well. Shoppers after a structured coach bag, a coach tote bag or a new jacket in the latest season’s styles will find it in the full-price range.
Coach Outlet is Coach’s own official outlet channel, made up of outlet stores and an official online outlet section on Coach’s own website. Product made for the outlet channel was put at around 85% of outlet goods in a 2014 quote from Coach’s head of investor relations, though the figure is now dated, and Tapestry has since discussed bringing some full-price product into outlets. Saying that outlet bags are always inferior, or identical to boutique bags, goes beyond the public evidence. British outlet stores are located at Bicester Village, Cheshire Oaks and Ashford Designer Outlet. People searching for the brand may type “couch” or “cosch”; before buying, check that any site promising steep discounts is really Coach’s own website or a known retailer.
